Though EVERY exercise can be an ab exercise, you can amplify your targeted abdominal training with some relatively inexpensive additions to your training equipment! That said, the most powerful weapons in the pursuit of a “6-pack” or a flat stomach are your fork and glass. Check out our equipment recommendations below and our video demonstrating how to use them effectively.
Ab Wheel/Ab Roller
For less than $20, you can get an ab wheel/ab roller. With this piece of equipment, you kneel down, grip the handles and roll the wheel out until your body is straight WITHOUT touching your hips to the ground. Then you wheel it back in to your starting position. This targets the abs and also gives the upper body some conditioning as well. If you don’t have $20 to spend you can improvise like one of our military trainees did a few years back. He took a hammer and slid it through the whole of a weight plate and performed the same exercise for $0. Shop Ab Rollers on Amazon. Don’t forget to start your Amazon purchase at smile.amazon.com and choose Patriot Training Foundation as your charity of choice to support our brother organization’s military trainees.
BOSU® Balance Trainer
We are also big fans of the BOSU® Balance Trainer which will run about $100-$190 depending on which model you choose and whether you are buying secondhand or using a promo code. This adds a great component to your ab exercises by adding the additional challenge to your balance and stability during the movement. Shea demonstrates oblique twists atop the BOSU®, beautifully maintaining her balance and targeting her obliques. One word of caution in using this equipment – do NOT use to stand on while combining it with shoulder presses or squats. It’s unnecessarily dangerous and ineffective. Shop BOSU®
